More information on tenterfield and the surrounding area

Tenterfield claims the title of “the Birthplace of Our Nation”, for it was here that Sir Henry Parkes, at that time the Premier of NSW, gave his famous Tenterfield Oration on 24th October 1889. Parkes advocated the Federation of the six Australian colonies, primarily for the united defence of the continent. Parkes was on his way back from talks with the Premier of Queensland, and put the finishing touches to his speech at Stannum. The town has much to attract and interest visitors, from historical buildings and beautiful tree-lined streets, to one of the best country golf course in Australia.

Tenterfield’s modern Visitor Information Centre is right in town at 157 Rouse St., and is open and staffed daily. Check out their excellent website for information on all the town and surrounding district has to offer.

Travelling north from Stannum, you will be able to sample the delights of The Granite Belt, with over 40 wineries within 40Km of Tenterfield. The Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre’s website has a wealth of information about the area.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website has information on all of its local National Parks. Bald Rock is just 30km out of town on the fully sealed Woodenbong road. This is the largest exposed granite-type rock in Australia, and is well worth a visit. Along the way you will pass turn-offs to Boonoo Boonoo and Basket Swamp National Parks.

Just across the border in Qld are Girraween and Sundown National Parks. Girraween NP is accessed off the New England Highway via a sealed road. The park actually adjoins the Bald Rock NP, and features dramatic granite outcrops. Parts of Sundown NP can be accessed via Ballandean on a FWD track, but the main access point is reached from the Bruxner Highway driving west from Tenterfield.
